Senior Spark: Karen's Mission is to Ignite Resilience in Every Age"

Meet Karen Berg

When Karen moved to New York City, she had no idea she would become an entrepreneur, a vice president at one of the most prestigious PR firms in the world and invent the field of media training. All she wanted to do was sing on Broadway.

In the male-dominated Mad Men landscape, she carved her niche, commanding her own office and secretary, and a vice-presidency. She formed her own company, wrote four books on communication skills, which are recognized as best sellers and award winners. Her clientele boasted titans of industry. Over her 30+ year career, she’s helped rebrand hundreds of CEO’s, celebrities, sports figures, and community leaders cementing her legacy as a trailblazer in her field. Her travels for business took her around the world.

But her successful career was abruptly interrupted when her 24-year-old son died of a drug overdose. It was then that she did an about face, through grief, to forge a career as a cabaret singer in New York City and Europe which led to her being part of a group that performed regularly at Lincoln Center.

Yet, amidst her professional triumphs, Karen’s heart remained anchored to community and people. She had a natural talent for understanding and helping people, making them feel comfortable and helping them grow as individuals. Helping people learn persuasive speaking skills, update their image, and find joy was something she loved doing, whether it was on TV or in her coaching studio.

But when COVID-19 hit, Karen faced new and unexpected problems. Not only had she entered a new stage in life as a senior, but she also felt very alone in her home, which was locked down because of the virus. Since she had just moved to Philly, she didn’t have any friends. Video conferences with old friends and relatives offered scant consolation, unable to replicate the warmth of human connection she yearned for. The absence of a bustling social life left a void she hadn’t realized she depended on.

In the middle of loneliness and isolation, Karen found herself disoriented, navigating her new neighborhood in a haze of confusion. Seeking refuge in a nearby coffee shop, she confronted the stark reality of her predicament.

Acknowledging her vulnerability was the first step towards reclaiming control. She discovered that confusion, while unsettling, was not uncommon among seniors facing life’s unexpected twists and turns. Determined to find a solution, Karen embarked on a quest for answers. She looked for a book to help guide her as she aged but found nothing useful so decided she had to write it herself.

Through relentless research and introspection, she uncovered a profound truth: We have more control over the aging process than we think, from embracing healthy nutrition to participating in physical activity to finding a romantic partner, to identifying our legacy. Armed with this insight, Karen devised a strategy to preemptively tackle these challenges, advocating preparedness as a cornerstone of senior well-being. Eager to share her newfound wisdom, Karen embarked on a mission to empower fellow seniors. She poured her experiences and insights into her new book, offering guidance on navigating life’s uncertainties with grace and resilience. Her vision transcended mere survival; she envisioned a future where seniors thrived, forging new connections and embracing the richness of life’s twilight years. The result: Senior Moment.
